Some of the more interesting news that caught my attention today:
Guess Who: The Newest Highest Paid Actor in Hollywood
Dwayne Johnson is the newest highest paid actor in Hollywood. You read that right, that’s Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, the football player and wrestler from when we were kids. According to Forbes, he booted out Robert Downey Jr. who was No. 1 on the list last year.
If you ask me though, the recognition is a bit misleading since Forbes included The Rock’s endorsement deal with Under Armour. So technically, he isn’t the highest paid actor for a movie per se. Nevertheless, The Rock earned a cool $64.5 million for the next Fast and Furious film and the Baywatch movie among others, so I’m pretty sure he’s laughing all the way to the bank right now.
Guess Who: The Highest Paid Actress in Hollywood
On the other hand, for the female actors, there’s no change among the rankings. Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence still reigns supreme for a second year in a row. The final installment of the Hunger Games movies is credited for her whopping $46 million paycheck this year.
Next on the list is comedian Melissa McCarthy from the recent Ghostbusters movie. If you’ve been following the news, the female Ghostbusters movie had gotten a lot of bad rep from fan boys ever since the concept was announced. You can still read some of the social commentaries on Tumblr and other similar sites, but in the end, money talks. The 2016 Ghostbusters movie earned $217.5 million in the box office. That’s not totally deplorable, but not entirely great either.
To some degree, I think all actors should try to be braver when it comes to their paycheck. There are far too many horror stories out there, of being underpaid in this industry. Yet, while actors will always return to their craft out of love, passion alone isn’t going to put food on the table and pay the bills—this much I’ve learned trying to make it. This is also why news about pay is always interesting to me.
RIP Gene Wilder
It is with great sadness that I give my condolences to the loved ones of Gene Wilder. Teenagers these days may best know him as the guy in that Willy Wonka meme making the rounds on the Internet, but the 1971 film, “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” is still a delight to watch after nearly five decades.
To me, he will forever be the better candy man than another acting great, Johnny Depp. Gene Wilder was delightfully weird and kooky in all the right ways. No offense to Johnny Depp fans but his take on the role borders on creepy at times.
